Reasons To Be Cheerful #6: Game of Thrones Season 3

3 Apr

It is the most pirated show ever and it’s finally back.

As any avid fan will know, the key to Game of Thrones’ success follows a familiar formula (there’s a clue there for you).

Just as Channel 5 was founded on the holy trinity of the ‘three fs’ (that’s football, fucking and films), GOT is based on its own hallowed triangular. Fucking, fantasy and froat slitting (bear with me).

We’re only one episode in, but that’s no reason not to make judgements on the entire series. This is what is cheering me thus far:

1. Tyrion Lannister remains a martyr

This could happen with too much power

This could happen with too much power

Much as it distressed me to see Tyrion verbally ripped to shreds by his evil, and probably incestuously-inclined, father, the saving grace here is huge. Tyrion’s one-liners and sharp wit would probably be out the door as soon as the power went to his head. I think we need him to continue as a black sheep. Come on the imp!

2. We learn delayed gratification

In our fast-paced, porn-saturated, internet-obsessed society blah de blah… you  can’t even be bothered to finish this sentence. What I’m trying to say is that those two hours waiting for the wheel of death or the bufferer on whatever illegal channel you are using to stream GOT. They just make you appreciate it more.

3. The impending rise of Margaery Tyrell

As Anne Boleyn in The Tudors (with head)

Yes Margaery or Anne Boleyn, whatever your name is (see other period drama/sexfest, The Tudors)! Finally a woman to rival the cunning Cersai. I see a quiet and bitter feud and I love it. How Cersai seethed while Joffers simpered. Margaery’s Princess Di turn (giving sweets to the orphans) coupled with some sicky brown-nosing of Joffrey points to a king wedder of high intellect. But will her fate be any better than that of Ms Boleyn??

4. Khaleesi

There’s not much more to say here. Her dragons have grown. She’s still looking great and keeping up with the Dothraki, liberating slaves and remaining satisfyingly disgusted by baby killers, even after that crown incident. And still turning down the faithful Ser Jorah *swoon*. What a lady.

(REASONS TO BE PISSED OFF: No more Khal Drogo. Still upsets me.)

I’ve never actually seen Game of Thrones but it does look even better than The Tudors (favourite line ‘His name is Mikel Angeeelow, they say he’s a genius’)
