Reasons To Be Cheerful #18: Ryanair

23 Apr

Being recently returned from a city break via the glorious vessel of Ryanair, I am newly reminded of the many joys that are to be found within budget aerospace. From the airtight security to the clientele, a budget airline really knows how to give the customer what she wants. Here are my personal faves:

We've never had it so good..

We’ve never had it so good..

For many of us, celebrations only happen on special occasions: birthdays and the suchlike. But for Ryanair, there’s a celebration every time the plane reaches its destination early. Fortunately for fans of a trumpeted arrival, Ryanair’s given arrival times often so happen to be around 15 minutes later than the actual landing time. Oh happy coincidence!

Despite being probably the safest mode of transport, air travel is also for many, the scariest. And understandably so, unless you get aerodynamics. With that in mind, it was a great comfort to have our seatbelts checked around 15 times during my return flight. It also more than compensated for nobody checking them on the way out.

The great thing about travelling cheaply is the chance to fill the spending gap with helpful extras. Ryanair kindly offers its customers the chance to book a seat, get priority boarding and buy over-priced travel insurance. Such convenience! How strange then, that nobody claimed to have booked any of the ‘unavailable’ seats shown to me by Ryanair’s booking system.

I always think there’s something satisfying about spending inordinate amounts of money on sub-standard food when you’re handing over foreign holiday cash. Unfortunately, neither of the two currencies accepted on the plane were that of the departure country. But I did get to throw all my leftover coins down one of those whirly charity boxes. (It didn’t work, cheers).

(REASONS TO BE PISSED OFF: In retrospect, missing the plane could have been a blessing in disguise)
