Reasons To Be Cheerful #9: (The Impending Release of) The Great Gatsby

8 Apr

The Great Gatsby is nearly upon us. True, it has been flaunted in our faces and then ripped away (from original December release) in the manner of Harry Potter films 5-8, but still my excitement is not dimmed.

I’m hoping for Moulin Rouge in America. That’s pretty much it. And of course there’s Leo.

1. The Cast

Leonardo Dicaprio is obviously a bit of a King Midas these days so we’ll talk about that later. But what of Carey Mulligan? People said she wasn’t beautiful enough to play Daisy, which I get, but I have a feeling she’ll pull it out the bag.

2. Leo + Baz Luhrmann

Last time we saw this duo it was in 1996’s Romeo + Juliet. And it was beautiful. Granted, Leonardo is not the young Adonis he once was – and I will tell anyone who cares to listen that I seriously suspect him to be carrying some secret fat underneath that 1920s tailoring – but he is still Leo. He makes sense as Gatsby – all glamorous but with dark layers. A bit like a gold-plated onion.

3. The Soundtrack

At this point, the question to ask is who isn’t on the soundtrack? Obvs, Jay Z is in charge, but we’re also looking at: Florence and the Machine, Lana Del Rey, Beyonce, Jack White, Q-Tip, will.i.am, Gotye and Fergie. I’m ignoring the last three for the sake of my point (Gotye????), but those are merely minor flaws. I’m particularly excited about Jack White. You just get the feeling he wouldn’t do it unless it was really really really good. You know?

4. A Proper Cinematic Experience

Seeing a BIG and glamorous, and massively hyped film like this; especially one where diamonds are shattering everywhere and everyone’s dressed in 1920s party regalia; this will be a proper cinema going experience. One to recall and be excited about. Like Titanic, and I’m not ashamed to say that.

(REASONS TO BE PISSED OFF: Writing and talking about this film forces me to overuse the word, glamorous)
